In the silence, in the quiet
Green waves gently lap the shore.
Dark rocks scattered in the sea
Wreath’d with garlands of white foam.
Lightless, soundless, like a dream.

Suddenly a jolt, an unexpected plunge:
A plummet into the surf from above.
Water surrounds me.
Waves mountain high.
Rocks like sharp teeth of a beast frothing at the mouth.

Gasping for breath.
Grasping the air.
Is this life? Is this death?
What help, what help? What utmost despair!
Is it dream? Is it truth? Or waking nightmare?
